Sometimes, our body and mind crave a break from the present to lose themselves in the beauty of past times. Right in the heart of the Costa del Sol, there is a stunning spot where the sea breeze blends with centuries of legends and a slow pace.
Strolling at a relaxed pace beneath the warm Andalusian light and gazing out at the horizon from a medieval fortress is one of the most comforting experiences of wellbeing our coastline has to offer. We invite you to discover a sanctuary where culture and aesthetic exclusivity come together.
What is the Sohail Castle?
The Sohail Castle is Fuengirola’s great stone guardian, an imposing fortress perched on a hill beside the mouth of the River Fuengirola. This bastion rises majestically overlooking the sea, offering one of the most stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline.
Today, it has established itself as the city’s great cultural and heritage landmark, a privileged vantage point that combines the grandeur of its defensive architecture with the contemplative peace sought by those wishing to escape from mass tourism.
History of Sohail Castle
The origins of this site take us back to a rich blend of civilisations that sought refuge on this strategic stretch of coastline. Although Roman and Phoenician remains have been found on the hill, the fortress we admire today was commissioned by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III in the 10th century.
During the era of Al-Andalus, the castle was home to a small fortified settlement and came to be known as Suhayl, the name the Arabs gave to what is now Fuengirola in honour of the star of the same name – the brightest in the southern hemisphere and a symbol of good fortune for sailors.
In 1485, the fortress was reconquered by Christian troops and subsequently underwent alterations to defend the coast against attacks by Barbary pirates. Centuries later, during the War of Independence, it became a strategic stronghold contested by Napoleonic troops, until the passage of time eventually transformed it into the peaceful monument we enjoy today.
Castle Opening Hours
To plan your visit and enjoy the fortress at your leisure, it is best to check its opening hours, which vary according to the length of daylight in each season:
• Winter opening hours (Tuesday to Sunday): 10.00–14.00. In the afternoons, it is open from 15:30 to 18:00.
• Summer opening hours (Tuesday to Sunday): 10:00 to 14:00. In the afternoons, opening hours are extended from 17:00 to 21:00 so you can enjoy the sunset.
• Monday: The venue is closed for maintenance and staff rest days.
Today: an exclusive cultural venue
Far from being consigned to oblivion, Sohail Castle has been reborn as a vibrant cultural hub hosting the Costa del Sol’s most sophisticated nightlife. Its illuminated walls provide the backdrop for exceptional events that attract a select, mature audience.
The outdoor and indoor areas are transformed throughout the year to offer unique aesthetic and sensory experiences under the starry sky.
- Marenostrum Fuengirola: A prestigious concert series bringing together top-tier international artists in an open-air auditorium by the sea.
- The Medieval Market: An annual event where the castle recaptures its historic atmosphere with gourmet delicacies and an evocative ambience.
- Festivals and live shows: From intimate musical evenings to cultural performances celebrating the roots of our region.
