The Fair of Fuengirola

The Fair of Fuengirola

The Fair of Fuengirola, in honour of its patroness, Virgen del Rosario, is just around the corner as, like every year, it will take place from October 6th to 12th.

The fair is one of the most important events on the Costa del Sol and is held at the Fairground, although the streets and bars in the city center will also be filled with a festival atmosphere.

The Fairground has 32 casetas open to all visitors. There, you can enjoy good wine and serrano ham among many other things, enjoy typical music and dances, and also admire beautiful flamenco dresses.

On Friday, October 6th, the first day of the fair, the opening speech and the lighting of the fairground will take place.

The 7th is the most important day as it's the day of the Virgen del Rosario, and for this reason, a traditional flamenco mass is celebrated in her honour. The mass takes place in the center of Fuengirola, specifically in the Constitution Square at the doors of the church dedicated to this Virgin. The popular and crowded mass is followed by a beautiful procession of carriages and horses heading to the Fairground. The horse is one of the main protagonists of the fair, and therefore, equestrian activities have special significance.

In Fuengirola, the fair is celebrated both day and night. During the day, fino wine and sevillanas dances delight locals and visitors , while at night, the spotlight is also shared with the amusements.

If you're fortunate to be at Hotel Angela during these days, don't hesitate for a second. Visit the center of Fuengirola and the Fairground and experience the fair. We're sure you've never seen anything like it before.

Additionally, on Friday the 4th at 12:00 P.M we will have a special activity about the fair and on Friday the 11th, at 2:00 P.M we will have a "rebujito" demo, the most typical drink of the fair. Both activities will take place by the pool, at the terrace.

 ¡¡Olé!¡

Hotel Angela joins the Libera Project initiative

Hotel Angela joins the Libera Project initiative

On September 27th, from the Hotel Angela , part of the ML HOTELES group, we joined the Fuengirola City Council in a day dedicated to cleaning our coasts; specifically, on the T breakwater.

This action is part of the Libera Project , an initiative by SEO/BirdLife in partnership with Ecoembres , which seeks to combat “basuraleza” (trash in nature) by mobilizing citizens. Within this project, the 1m2 campaign for our beaches and seas focuses on the conservation and cleaning of our coasts.

During the day, we managed to collect several kilos of waste . This confirms that every action counts, and by participating in these days, we help preserve ecosystems and improve water quality, among other things. Therefore, it is essential to continue promoting environmental awareness to enjoy cleaner and safer beaches.

We would like to heartily thank all the participating staff for their commitment. We would also like to extend our thanks to Fuengirola Town Hall for allowing us to take part in this activity.

Together, we prove that when we unite, we can achieve great things. Let's keep working towards a cleaner environment!

Plans for September on the Costa del Sol: Fuengirola a Caballo and the Rooftop of Hotel Angela

Plans for September on the Costa del Sol: Fuengirola a Caballo and the Rooftop of Hotel Angela

September is the perfect month to enjoy life outdoors, and what better way to do it than with these two great plans:

  • The 7th Edition of Fuengirola a Caballo

Next Saturday, the 21st of September, Fuengirola will dress up to celebrate the seventh edition of el Día del Caballo, the Day of the Horse.

The event will start at 09:00 in the morning with a gathering of horse-drawn carriages in calle Méndez Núñez, next to the mosque of Fuengirola.

At 11:30 a.m. the carriage exhibition will take place, departing from Avenida Condes San Isidro and going past the beautiful promenade of Los Boliches, a perfect opportunity to enjoy the show from the terrace of Hotel Angela!

This year this exhibition will be very special for us as it will be in memory of Don José Luis Martín Lorca, founder of ML Hoteles, of which both Hotel Ángela and Hotel Yaramar are part of.

From 12:00 to 17:00, the Plaza de la Constitución will be full of life with incredible equestrian shows. In addition, at 18:00 and 20:00, the Plaza de los Reyes Católicos will host musical performances, while at 19:00, right there, the dress and harness competition will take place, where you can admire the elegance and art of the equestrian tradition.

  • Rooftop of Hotel Angela: Relax and Good Vibes

If at sunset, after a long day, you are looking for a quiet but magical place to relax, we recommend you visit the new Rooftop of the Angela Hotel. Open every day from 20:00 hours, our Rooftop is the perfect place to enjoy fantastic cocktails while feeling the gentle sea breeze. With spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea, it is the ideal spot to unwind.

On Fridays and Saturdays, you can also enjoy live music between 21:00 and 23:00, creating a charming atmosphere that will make your evening at our hotel even more special.

We hope these two recommendations inspire you to explore and enjoy your visit to Fuengirola to the fullest!

How do we save water at Hotel Angela?

How do we save water at Hotel Angela?

We tell you all about it today, on World Water Day.

Surely you have noticed that almost all hotels have now advice on the rooms about how to take care of the environment. For example: "Help us to make a sustainable use of water. If you hang your towel on the towel rail it means that you will use it one more time".

Today we would like to inform you about what we do as a company in terms of responsible water use:

1.    Water saving techniques:

  • -         we implement efficient procedures in the backwashing of our pool filters, which allows us to guarantee the quality of the water without using large quantities of water for the cleaning process.
  • -         We have installed taps with aerators in the rooms, to reduce water consumption without sacrificing the comfort of our guests. In the common areas, we have also installed taps with automatic sensors to minimise water wastage.

2.    Specialised training: our maintenance technicians are trained to ensure the responsible management of our facilities, including the optimal care of our swimming pool.

3.    Automated water treatment system: we have automated the control of water quality through technologies that ensure its correct treatment and efficient use. These systems use purification and disinfection technologies to eliminate impurities and microorganisms, ensuring a safe and healthy water supply for our guests and employees.

4.    Water reuse: We implement water reuse systems that recycle rainwater or water used for hand washing. It is used for watering green areas or filling toilet tanks. In this way we maximise water use by reducing overall water consumption and promoting water conservation.

5.    Preventive maintenance: We carry out regular preventive maintenance on our water installations. This allows us to identify and sort out any possible leaks, breakdowns, or equipment malfunctions, thus ensuring efficient water use and avoiding unnecessary losses due to undetected problems.

6.    Water footprint calculation: this year, we will join the evaluation of our water footprint, to assess our impact on water consumption and management, further committing ourselves to sustainability and care for the resource.

Now, we extend this invitation to you, our guest. During your stay at Hotel Angela, we encourage you to implement simple but significant water saving measures:

  1. -         Reuse your towels and sheets to reduce the frequency of washing.
  2. -         Turn off taps when not in use.
  3. -         Opt for short and efficient showers.

By joining together in this global effort, we ensure that water keeps flowing, bringing harmony among all nations and communities. Let's keep working together for a future where water is accessible to all!

Spring is almost here

Spring is almost here

Spring is just around the corner, and its arrival always brings us joy: we are more cheerful, temperatures are on the rise, and this makes us want to spend more time outdoors, so it is the perfect season to travel.

One of the most attractive destinations to visit is undoubtedly the Costa del Sol and one of the most popular plans to do here is to enjoy the sun and beach.  Fuengirola certainly has some of the best beaches in Spain, not only for the cleanliness of its waters, but also for the quality of the sand, and for the wide variety of water and beach sports that can be practised there.

It is not only great for beach sports, but it is also the ideal destination for golf. Known as the Costa del Golf, the Costa del Sol is the perfect place to play this sport, as the province of Malaga is home to more than 70 first class golf courses where you can enjoy this exciting activity.

In addition to the good weather and the many sports that can be practised here, the Costa del Sol is one of the best places to enjoy this time of the year because of its Holy Week representations, as Malaga city is one of the cities in Spain that stands out for its impressive processions.

Are you now ready to plan your next visit to the Costa del Sol?

At Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, we are looking forward to welcoming you with open arms.

We hope to see you very soon!

World Environmental Education Day

World Environmental Education Day

At Hotel Angela in Fuengirola, we are committed to encourage environmental education, creating spaces where information becomes inspiration. We value the importance of cultivating knowledge and awareness, sowing the seed of change in all generations.

We encourage environmental education because understanding and knowing our environment is the key to protecting it and building a future where every visit to our hotel is an opportunity to learn about our planet.

Did you know that the province of Malaga has a fascinating biodiversity? From the different migratory birds that pass through our skies, to the emblematic oceanic Posidonia that inhabits our sea. Discovering these secrets is a unique opportunity to connect with the planet in a meaningful way.

By exploring this knowledge, we not only enrich our minds, but also become passionate advocates for sustainability. Together we can create a legacy of respect and care for our environment.

We invite you to be an active part of environmental protection during your stay. Every action count: recycling properly, reducing the use of plastics and saving water are simple but powerful actions that contribute to preserving the environment.

By adopting these sustainable practices, you will not only enjoy a conscious vacation, but you will also be a protector of the natural wealth that makes the Costa del Sol a unique destination.

Hotel Angela lights with sustainable energy

Hotel Angela lights with sustainable energy

At Hotel Angela, we are committed to a greener and more sustainable future. We are proud to announce that we have taken an important step in this direction: we have installed solar photovoltaic panels in our hotel located in Fuengirola, Costa del Sol!
This initiative represents a major achievement in our ongoing quest to reduce our carbon footprint. By using solar energy, we are contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions, helping to combat climate change and preserve the natural environment around us.
The advantages of using renewable energy don't stop there. Some of the additional benefits include:

- Less Dependence on Fossil Fuels: Every kWh of solar energy we use decreases our dependence on fossil fuels, thus contributing to climate change mitigation.
- Energy Savings: Photovoltaic panels allow us to take advantage of a free, renewable energy source, which translates into significant savings in our energy costs.
- Long Life: Solar panels are durable and require little maintenance. They work even on cloudy or rainy days, which guarantees a long-term investment.
- Environmental Leadership: We demonstrate our commitment to the environment and encourage others to follow our example in the transition to a more sustainable future.
We remain committed to sustainability and to providing high quality accommodation in harmony with planet earth. Join us on this journey towards a cleaner, greener world.

Summer nights at Hotel Angela

Summer nights at Hotel Angela

If you have been fortunate to stay with us in the past around this time of year you possibly know that at Hotel Angela during the summer we open our Snack Bar in the evenings on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9:00 P.M to 12:00 A.M.

You will have fun there, can have a drink under the moon light, make the most of the sea breeze and enjoy the fantastic live music that we offer there in the evening from 9:15 P.M to 10:45 P.M.

Very soon from our Snack Bar Terrace, besides the evening entertainment, you will also be able to experience one of the most awaited events of the year in Los Boliches.

Los Boliches is the neighbourhood where Hotel Angela is located and on the 16th of July is the day of its patron saint, Virgen del Carmen.

Being a man of the sea is a very hard and risky job, so due to the protection they believe the virgin gives them every 16th of July many of them take her out in procession to express their gratitude.

This procession is considered by many as the most unique and special of the year so if right now you are on holiday at Hotel Angela we certainly recommend to visit our pool terrace on Sunday the 16th in the evening, from 9:00 P.M, to see this beautiful procession that ends with the Virgin in the sea surrounded by small boats and fireworks.

Enjoy one of the most stunning events in Fuengirola!

Finally summer arrived

Finally summer arrived

Summer is finally here

Are you having a great holiday right now, at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola? If that is your case, you will have the chance to celebrate with us the arrival of summer.

On Thursday, the 22nd of June, Hotel Angela, has organised from 9:00 P.M., a great Summer Party for all our guests with live Latin music in our pool terrace.

The following evening, 23rd of June, is the night known as Noche de San Juan and it is one of the most awaited ones in the year as it is the official start of summers.

On San Juan, it is tradition to go to the beach with friends and family to celebrate the arrival of the most popular time of year in Costa del Sol.

The atmosphere that night is magic and celebrating it with you makes it even more special. It is because of this that every year we organise a fun party in the Rivera Beach Club, which belongs to our sister hotel, Hotel Yaramar.

The party is for both, guests of the Yaramar, and you, guests of the Angela and we kindly ask everyone to wear something white.

From 11:00 P.M in the Rivera Beach Club we will give our guests a complimentary cocktail, we will have live music and at midnight from a nearby beach, Playa de San Francisco, there will be a stunning firework display.

That night, to celebrate the beginning of the summer season, at 12:00 A.M, many people follow the beautiful tradition of swimming in the sea, or just wetting their feet, to get purified, get good vibes and make some special wishes.

We are looking forward to having a great time, and you surely do too, so we would love to celebrate the start of summer together!

Happy San Juan!

Grandma's Casserole

Grandma's Casserole

Despite the fact that the weather is still spectacular, after all, we are in autumn, and at this time of the year what we most want is to eat rich and comforting stews, hence the culinary route of Fuengirola called "La Cazuela de la Abuela” is celebrated this month.

This 2022 will in fact be its twelfth edition and a large number of local establishments will participate in it, who from this Friday, November 4 and until Sunday the 20th will offer for only €3.50 a delicious casserole accompanied by a drink (wine, beer, soda or water).

As has been the case for many years, one of these participating establishments is the Chiringuito Rivera, belonging to our sister hotel, Hotel Yaramar, which this year participates with a delicious seafood and fish zarzuela that has among its main ingredients prawns, mussels, rosada, squid, vegetables and fish stock... Doesn't that sound good?

If you are currently on vacation at the Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, and you are passionate about Spanish cuisine, we recommend that you stop by the Chiringuito Rivera, to try the casserole that its chef Salvador has prepared for you this year with so much grace and affection and of course that you vote for her on the digital cover that the Fuengirola City Council has designed for the occasion.

From here we wish Salvador the best of luck and we hope that his little casserole ends up as a finalist as in past editions.

On Thursday June 23, the night of San Juan, the beach bars in Fuengirola (including the Chiringuito Rivera belonging to our sister hotel, Hotel Yaramar) will offer a skewer of sardines plus a drink for 5 euros throughout the evening and there will also be music live.

New exhibition at CAC Mijas

New exhibition at CAC Mijas

Last week here on the Hotel Angela's blog we talked about a wonderful photographic exhibition in Malaga.

Today things continue to be about art, since the CAC Mijas is currently hosting a very interesting exhibition called "From North to South".

"From North to South" is a collective temporary exhibition made up of 33 pictorial works by artists from Spain and Sweden, among other nationalities, which can be visited until this Friday, June 17.

Antequera´s Torcal

Antequera´s Torcal

Last month here on the blog of Hotel Angela we recommended you to visit the town of Antequera and its spectacular dolmens.

dólmenes de Antequera

Today we would like to continue talking about Antequera, though this time it will be about its stunning Torcal.

The Torcal of Antequera is an important natural spot known for the amazing shapes of its limestones. Its origin is Jurassic and despite its height this group of rocks was part of the sea bottom between 250 and 150 million of years ago… Well impressive!

In 2016 this fabulous place was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

This is one of the most interesting and amazing spots in Spain despite being quite unknown to most tourists who chose Costa del Sol as their holiday destination.

The Torcal is just 49 miles away from Fuengirola so in just over 1 hour by car you will be there.

The Torcal is truly amazing, and it is not far at all, so we obviously recommend you visit it as it is well worth it. You will be amazed!

The Dolmens of Antequera

The Dolmens of Antequera

If you are passionate about art and prehistory and you like learning new things and exploring new places while on holiday, then what we are going to tell you right now might awake your curiosity and your adventurous spirit.

Stonehenge, the fascinating megalithic monument in the South of England, is well-known around the world but did you know that the tallest group of dolmens in Europe is fact in the South of Spain and they are even bigger than ones in Stonehenge?

The dolmens we are talking about are in Malaga; to be more precise they are in the town of Antequera, around 31 miles away from Malaga and 49 miles from Fuengirola.

This archeological ensemble is one of the most important ones in Europe and in the world.

On this blog we always do our best to motivate you and encourage you to discover the secrets that our region hides, and these dolmens are indeed a great example of a hidden gem as not many tourists coming to Malaga know about their existence, which is a pity considering they are well worth a visit.

If you find them fascinating, we hope you make the most of your holiday at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, by visiting Antequera and its spectacular dolmens.

The dolmens of Antequera are open Tuesday to Saturday from 09:00 A.M to 6:00 P.M, Sundays and Bank Holidays from 09:00 A.M to 3:00 P.M. The entry price is free for EU citizens and 1,5€ for citizens of other countries.

You won’t regret your visit as you won’t find something as spectacular anywhere in the world!

New gourmet market in Torremolinos

New gourmet market in Torremolinos

Do you enjoy good Andalusian food and have fun finding new places to eat you whenever you visit the Costa del Sol?

If that is the case, as today it is the Day of Andalusia, we recommend you visit the new amazing gourmet market in Torremolinos.

The “Sabor a Malaga” Gourmet Market opened last summer, and it is in Plaza de la Independencia, right in the centre of Torremolinos.

It is open every day from 1:00 P.M to 1:00 A.M. and although this is not a very big market, in the few months it has been available has received quite an important number of visitors eager to try the amazing options its stalls offers.

The choice is quite extense as it is possible to eat things like grilled meat, fish, seafood, Iberian products, cheeses, cocktails, ice creams and even cakes. Besides this, inside the market there is a “Sabor a Malaga” stall where typical products from the region can be purchased.

You surely agree that the Malaga region has a vast number of bars and restaurants like not many other places in Spain. Now that we have also added this kind of popular gourmet market to the Costa del Sol culinary offer this is even more impressive.

Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, surely recommends you go to Torremolinos to visit this new market next time you come over.

Costa del Sol and high-quality local food are definitely a winning combination!

Picasso's Birth House and Museum

Picasso's Birth House and Museum

Picasso, the most relevant Spanish artist worldwide, was born in Malaga on the 25th of October 1881, so to commemorate the 140th anniversary of his birth today Hotel Angela recommends you visit his Birth House and the Picasso Museum, both in Malaga city centre.

The access to Malaga from our hotel in public transport is great as you can get there by train, taking it in Los Boliches Train Station.

Picasso’s Birth House is located in number 15 of Plaza de la Merced, so it is easy accessible if walking. In this same square, on a bench near the entrance door of the building, there is a bronze statue of Picasso with which you can get photographed. Inside the house there is an exhibition of his paintings, and some pottery works together with some personal items from the famous painter.

The Birth House is open daily, and the regular entry price is around 3 euros… well worth it!!

On the other hand, the Picasso Museum is in the Buenavista Palace, a building from the 16th century in Calle San Agustín, right in the centre of the city. It holds a permanent collection as well as some temporary exhibitions. The Museum opens daily, and its regular price is around 9 euros though the entrance is free every Sunday from 2 hours before its closing time.

Hotel Angela encourages you to discover a new much more cultural side of Malaga that most of you might not know and that will certainly impress you… Enjoy the visit!!

Shopping in Fuengirola: Sales

Shopping in Fuengirola: Sales

Christmas is just over, and as soon as the festive period ends…the sales start!

While in most countries these start the day after Christmas, in Spain sales started last Monday, 7th of January, the day after 3 Wise Men Day.

Fuengirola and Mijas are two of the best towns in Costa del Sol to go shopping as we have many shops in the city centre and lots more in our big shopping centres: Miramar Shopping Centre and Corte Inglés Costa Mijas.

The Miramar Shopping Centre has over 140 leisure and shopping spaces. Some of them belonging to important national and international retailers specialised in fashion, accessories and decoration.

On the other hand Centro Comercial Costa Mijas belongs to famous Spanish department store El Corte Inglés. This is a big shopping mall located in Las Lagunas that offers a big selection of products, from food to technology, jewelry, perfumes and cosmetics as well as important national and international fashion brands.

Both shopping centres open from Monday to Saturday from 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., and although both are a bit distant to Hotel Angela both are easily accessible thanks to the fantastic bus links we have.

The bus lines that connect Fuengirola to the Miramar Shopping Centre are lines 1,4 and 5 and these buses can be taken in Los Boliches very close to our hotel, in Avenida Jesús el Cautivo.

As for the buses to Costa Mijas, these are lines M127 and M129 and they depart from Fuengirola bus station.

If you are currently on holiday at Hotel Angela or you are planning to visit us soon we recommend you to make the most of the fantastic sales we currently have in Costa del Sol.

Have fun shopping in Fuengirola!

Route of the erotic tapa of Fuengirola

Route of the erotic tapa of Fuengirola

This week here on the Hotel Angela's blog, we are thrilled to announce the eagerly awaited arrival of the popular Erotic Tapas Route in Fuengirola.

This year marks its eleventh edition, and since its inception in 2009, the number of people who decide not to miss it each year has been increasing.

In 2019, the route takes place from Friday, November 1st, until Sunday, November 17th, with the price of a tapa accompanied by a drink being €2.50.

By the way, did you know that Chiringuito Rivera, belonging to Hotel Yaramar, our sister hotel, is participating again for the seventh consecutive year?

Salvador, their chef, who is already an expert in this type of cuisine, has once again prepared a fun and cheeky tapa with a spectacular flavor.

He has named it "Exotic Duo", and it consists of a prawn covered with a strip of potato, with milk aioli, 2 varieties of lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and a touch of balsamic vinegar, so you can imagine how delicious it must be.

If you are currently on vacation at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, and you are passionate about Spanish cuisine, we recommend that you don't miss the best and most enjoyable gastronomic route on the Costa del Sol.

Enjoy your meal!

Fair of Malaga

Fair of Malaga

We are already in mid-August and like every year around this time, the city of Malaga celebrates its fair.

The Malaga Fair will begin on Thursday, August 15th, which is also a public holiday throughout Spain, and will end next Saturday, August 24th.

Although it doesn't have a fixed date, it's always celebrated in the middle of the month as it has its origins in the commemoration of the reconquest of Malaga by the Catholic Monarchs on August 19th, 1487.

The Malaga Fair is one of the most anticipated events of the year on the Costa del Sol, both for the locals and for visitors.

It's a celebration that has its traditional side, while also being cosmopolitan and international due to the large number of visitors from all around the world who come to Malaga specifically to experience the fair.

If you are currently on vacation at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, we recommend you visit the fantastic daytime fair that takes place in the center of Malaga around the beautiful and central Calle Larios.

San Juans night

San Juans night

This week is very special at Hotel Ángela as this Sunday night marks the celebration of San Juan's Night.

In the past, here on the Hotel Angela blog, when we've talked about San Juan, we've explained that it's a very important date on the Costa del Sol as we celebrate the official start of summer.

For this reason, as in previous years, Hotel Angela, together with Hotel Yaramar and Hotel Florida Spa, has prepared a very special event for us to share such a magical night together.

On the night of June 23rd, around 10:30 PM at Chiringuito Rivera, belonging to our sister hotel, Hotel Yaramar, there will be a special party for all customers of Hotel Yaramar, Hotel Florida Spa, and of course, you, the customers of Hotel Angela.

There, we'll have our traditional "júas" competition, live music by the popular musical duo "Esperanto", along with a complimentary glass of sangria for our customers, and a special offer for that night: skewered sardines with a drink for only €5.

By the way, speaking of "júas", if you're currently at Hotel Angela and you enjoy crafts, we recommend that on Friday, the 21st, starting from 11:30 AM, you come by our pool as Dulce, our public relations, needs your help to create the "júas" that will represent Hotel Angela in Sunday's competition between Hotel Angela, Hotel Yaramar, and Hotel Florida Spa.

The prize for this competition, like every year, is an extra hour of Happy Hour on the 24th for the winning hotel.

Happy San Juan, and may the best "júas" win! See you on Sunday at Chiringuito Rivera!

The English Cemetery of Malaga

The English Cemetery of Malaga

On the blog of Hotel Angela we always try to encourage you to discover the most beautiful spots of Malaga, so today we would like to recommend you visit the unique English cemetery.

This historical cemetery is in Malaga city centre in an area known as La Malagueta. This is the first protestant cemetery in the Iberian Peninsula.

It opened in 1831 due to the problems that back in the day there were to bury the big English colony that lived in Malaga, as up until then in Malaga non catholics were buried by the beach under torch lights.

William Mark (British consul in 1821), was present in these burials so we he did all he could to find a place where the members of his community could get buried with dignity. In 1829 the local authorities of Malaga finally accepted his request and gave him a piece of land that back in the day was in the outskirts of the city.

In this cemetery we can find many important English people in Malaga as they helped in the development of the city. Among them are British author and hispanist Gerald Brennan or British economist Marjorie Grice-Hutchinson.

For 175 years the cemetery was run by British consuls, thanks to a small contribution from the English government. When this contribution stopped, the cemetery got abandoned, until 1990 when Consul Bruce McIntyre started managing it and created a conservation fund.

The English cemetery of Malaga got declared to be a site of Cultural Interest in 2012, and it is registered in the Association of important cemeteries in Europe for its artistic, literary and botanic value.

If right now you are on holiday at Hotel Angela and you would like to visit it we recommend you to include it in your list of interesting places to visit in Malaga.

Enjoy Malaga city and have fun exploring all the great places that can be seen there!

Christmas in Fuengirola

Christmas in Fuengirola

A few days ago, on the Hotel Angela's Facebook page, your hotel in Fuengirola, we shared a beautiful video about the wonderful Christmas light and sound show that can be seen daily at Plaza de España in the center of Fuengirola until January 6th.

From Monday to Friday, there are 5 daily shows (19:00, 19:30, 20:00, 20:30, 21:00), with an extra show at 21:30 on weekends and holidays.

In Fuengirola at Christmas, besides enjoying this lovely Christmas show, there are many more things to do.

For example, at Constitution Square, there's a beautiful Christmas Market with wooden stalls until December 17th.

Plaza de los Reyes Católicos hosts the municipal Nativity scene, but this isn't the only Nativity scene you can visit in our city. At Hermandad Jesús Cautivo, located on Avenida Jesús Cautivo (in Los Boliches, near the Fairground), there's another beautiful Nativity scene that can be visited until January 6th on Tuesdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 11:00 to 13:30, and on other days from 17:00 to 20:30.

In Los Boliches, besides this Nativity scene, there's also a Nativity scene made of cold porcelain on the first floor of Edificio Los Colores, which can be visited until January 6th.

And starting from Friday, December 8th, you can also visit the one located at Hermandad de Cristo Yacente's house (on Calle Camilo José Cela, next to Bioparc) from 11:30 to 13:30 and from 18:00 to 20:30.

If you're into music, on December 6th, there will be a free concert by the Municipal Band of Music and Finnish musicians at 20:00 at the Palacio de Paz (Fairground) to celebrate Finland's Independence Day and the Spanish Constitution Day.

In conclusion, in Fuengirola, there are plenty of things to do during these holidays. So, if you're currently on vacation at Hotel Angela and you want to experience Christmas in Spain, we recommend not missing out on the great entertainment options that Fuengirola offers this Christmas.

The Sevillanas

The Sevillanas

The Fair of Fuengirola continues this week as it is on until the 12th of October.

As we explained on Friday, during our special activity about the fair, the Fair of Fuengirola is one of the most important in Costa del Sol, and thinking about it is thinking about beautiful flamenco dresses and the sound of “sevillanas” playing in the background.

Although the “sevillanas” is a typical dancing and singing originally from Sevilla it is heard and danced in all fairs and festivals in Andalusia.

“Sevillanas” is divided in 4 parts and it is usually danced in pairs. The lyrics can talk about many different topics like everyday life or important religious and love events among many other things.

Its origin is set around the Catholic Monarchs times and nowadays it is the most danced regional dance in Spain and abroad.

If right now you are on holiday at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, and have not visited the fair yet, we recommend you do it as there is still plenty of time.

You will surely have fun there and might enjoy seeing locals dancing this mesmerising dance!

Curiosities about Spanish food

Curiosities about Spanish food

Did you that at the Angela every Friday we now have special themed dinners in our restaurant?

This week we will have a Spanish themed dinner and next week it will be Italian.

As this Friday, the 12th of May, your dinner will be Spanish we thought it would be great to share with you five interesting health related facts about Spanish food.

Here they come:
  • Spanish cuisine is one of the healthiest in the world, so consuming it will have a very positive impact in our health.

  • Vegetables are one of the main ingredients in most of our dishes. They are full of antioxidants and fight off ageing and disease. Vegetables are also high in fibre and vitamins.

  • Fish is also very popular in Spain, especially in Costa del Sol. Fish is rich in omega 3 fatty acids which help us control cholesterol and are great for our brain.

  • Nothing combines better with a tasty dish of Spanish food than a good glass of wine. Wine consumed in moderation is good for the heart and lowers cholesterol, plus it is also rich in antioxidants.

  • Spain is also the most important producer of olive oil in the world with a 44% of market share. Olive oil, rich in mono unsaturated fatty acids, is the most important ingredient in our diet, and this means that we have longer life expectancies and lower risks of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure than other nationilities.

All this just proves that Spanish food is not only delicious but also extra healthy.

We hope you enjoy the amazing Spanish dinner our chefs at Hotel Angela have prepared for you this Friday in our restaurant.

Buen provecho!

Los Boliches train station

Los Boliches train station

This week here on the blog of Hotel Ángela, your hotel in Fuengirola, we have the pleasure to inform you that Los Boliches train station is operative again.

In October Renfe started to refurbish the closest station to our hotel as it was necessary to improve its access and to install a lift. Because of this the station had to stay closed for a while but on Friday the 18th of March it reopened.

While it was closed train users had to either go for the Torreblanca station or the central one located in Fuengirola city centre, so the news of the reopening of Los Boliches station filled us with joy as many of us use it to commute or visit different parts of our beautiful coast.

Now the station has been refurbished people with reduced mobility and visual impairment are able to access the station and its trains more easily than before, which is obviously great news and means the wait was well worth it.

Train times are the same as before and there are services every 20 minutes.

If you are planning to visit us soon, you can now consider getting to our hotel from the airport by train as it is quite easy and very cheap. Same applies if you fancy exploring other resorts during your holiday at the Angela.

Los Boliches station was much missed, but now it is back and looking fantastic!

The fig bread

The fig bread

Just 2 weeks ago here on the blog of Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, we talked about the tradicional and Chrismassy “pestiños” as that is the sweet pastry that our Marina Bay Café has chosen to serve while the “Sweet Christmas” route, organised by the Fuengirola City Council, is on.

Today we would like to continue talking about local traditional Christmas sweets and because of this we have prepared a post about a very typical and healthy one called “fig bread”.

Although its name contains the word bread it does not have flour or corn among its ingredients but dried figs, almonds, cloves and aniseed.

What we know about it is that is a humble recipe linked to the countryside which origin is possibly Moorish.

Although it is a sweet prepared and eaten all over Spain the “fig bread” elaborated in the Malaga region is one of the most famous in Spain, especially the one from Coin, a beautiful town in inland Malaga only 21 miles away from Fuengirola.

Although every place is the world has its traditional Christmas sweets and its customs it does not really matter if we celebrate the festive season eating nougat, “fig breads”, panettones or Christmas puddings, what matters is that we do it surrounded by our loved ones.

Happy holidays!

Japanese Calmness & Andalusian Passion

Last year in March here on the blog of Hotel Angela we recommended you not to miss a fantastic exhibition called “Japan: honour and tradition” which at the time was on display in our local museum.“Japonese Calmness & Andalusian Passion”

This time we would like to recommend you something similar as from the 14th of October our local Casa de la Cultura, located in the city centre of Fuengirola, is housing another great exhibition about Japan called “Japanese Calmness & Andalusian Passion”.

This is composed by 12 pieces of big dimensions created by Japanese artists Michiko Iwakura and Yoko Usue.

The best thing about this exhibition is that it not only gives you the possibily to appreciate the pieces of art but also allows you to participate in several activities related Japan and its culture like a traditional tea ceremony or an Ikebana demonstration.

The activity scheduled for this and next week is a Japanese caligraphy workshop.

The Ajoblanco

The Ajoblanco

As most of you might already know gazpacho is a very popular cold soup in Spain and now also worldwide. This is a very typical Andalusian dish which is also very low in calories and great to have in summer as it is very refreshing and very nutritive at the same time.

Although this is the cold soup par excelence it is not the only one. There are many other healthy and tasty ones and a good example of this is ajoblanco.

Ajoblanco is also a very popular dish of the Andalusian cuisine, especially in the region of Malaga. It is prepared with very simple ingredients like bread, ground almonds, garlic, water, olive oil, salt and vinegar and it tends to get served with some grapes or with some small chunks of melon.

It might sound like quite a peculiar combination but all these ingredients work perfectly well together so the final result, like in the case of gazpachor, is an amazing dish.

Here we leave you a very simple recipe in case you feel like preparing it at home:

Ingredients (Serves 4)
  • 100 grams of almonds

  • 2 cloves of garlic

  • 1 litre of water

  • 200 grams of the inside part of bread, the crumb

  • 1 glass of extra virgin olive oil

  • 2 tbsp of vinegar

  • A pinch of salt

To go with it:
  • Grapes or melon

Method

1. If the bread is a bit hard moist it with water until it gets soft.

2. Dip the almonds in boiling water so this way you will be able to peel them better once they have cooled down.

3. We smash the almonds and the garlic with a mortar and we add a pinch of salt while we do it.

4. Then add the moist bread to it and create a mush by adding the olive oil little by little.

5. Add the vinegar and put everything in another container with the water.

6. Blend until you get a uniform liquid.

7. Let it rest in the fridge.

8. When it is cold, serve it in bowls and put some grapes or small chunks of melon in it.

This dish is in fact very important in Almachar, a beautiful town in La Axarquía where every year on the first Saturday of September a traditional festival in honour of this dish is celebrated. The event is called “Fiesta del Ajoblanco” and its aim is to keep this traditional dish alive and to promote it.

This Saturday in fact will be when this festival will be on, so if you are currently on holiday at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, and you fancy discovering a new and beautiful place on Costa del Sol and trying a new and delicious dish…Why don’t you visit Almachar?

Selwo Aventura

Selwo Aventura

Every week here on the blog of Hotel Angela apart from informing you about currents events on Costa del Sol and recommending you towns and monuments to visit in some occasions we have also told you about some of the many tourist attractions in the area.

Quite recently we told you about the new specimens you can see at Bioparc Fuengirola and about the beautiful dolphinarium in the neighbouring town of Benalmadena. Today we would like to introduce you Selwo Aventura, another very popular attraction linked to the animal world.

Selwo Aventura is a massive adventure park located in Estepona which is home to many animal and plant species from Africa.

Among the most popular species you can find at Selwo are lions, rhinoceros, giraffes and zebras.

Apart from observing these and many more species you will also be able to live unique experiences like riding a dromedary or participating in a safari which will allow you to see closely and feed some of the most amusing species in the park.

Selwo Aventura is about 31 miles away from Fuengirola but, as it is a very popular attraction on Costa del Sol, it is quite easy to get there thanks to the bus line that connects Malaga city with the adventure park. In fact, daily at 10:05 A.M this bus stops at Fuengirola bus station and it reaches its destination at 11:15 A.M.

If you are interested in visiting it you might also like to know that you can get your tickets either online, at the ticket office or at the reception desk of Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola.

As you can see visiting this attraction cannot be easier so if you are an animal lover and you fancy living an African adventure without having to leave Costa del Sol, why don’t you include Selwo Aventura in your holiday plans?

New specimens in Bioparc Fuengirola

New specimens in Bioparc Fuengirola

Did you know that we have new and exotic inhabitants in Fuengirola, at Bioparc?

Quite recently Bioparc Fuengirola has extended its premises by creating a new area called Indo-Pacific in order to home some new species from this part of the planet.

The most popular species out of the newly arrived ones is the Komodo dragon, the biggest lizard in the world which can be over 3 metres long and weigh up to 150 kilos. This and weigh up to massive reptile from the Komodo Island in Indonesia is very well known for its poisonous bite and due to its big size it is also a great predator and an excellent hunter.

Apart from the 2 komodo dragons and the other new species that now live in the Indo-Pacific area at Bioparc some baby animals have been born there recently. A few months ago a pair of friendly bearcats got born and just 6 days ago they also welcomed a super small and cute baby mouse-deer.

As you know you can easily get your tickets for Bioparc Fuengirola and other attractions on Costa del Sol at reception, so if you are on holiday at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, and you fancy meeting these amazing new residents we recommend you not to miss a visit to Bioparc.

You will certainly have a great time!

This attraction is called Selwo Marina and it is one of the most popular and visited on Costa del Sol.

The Cathedral of Malaga

The Cathedral of Malaga

The cathedral is the most important and beautiful monuments in the city of Malaga and also one of the most visited.

Its official name is “Cathedral of Our Lady of the Encarnación”, though everybody in Malaga knows it simply by “The Cathedral”.

The Catholic Monarchs were who ordered its construction some days after conquering the city in 1487.

The cathedral was build where an old Almohad mosque stood and it was in 1528 when it started to get built.

254 years passed till the works finished. In 1782 when the construction was stopped one tower remained unfinished, so this is the reason why this cathedral is commonly known as “The amputee”.

There are different theories about the unfinished tower. Some say that the money that was going to be used to finish off the cathedral got sent to the United States in order to help them during their independence; other people though think that the funds were invested to improve the access to Antequera.

The cathedral of Malaga is the second highest in Andalusia and because of its missing tower is also one of the most unique and best known in Spain. The regular ticket is about 5 €, but the visit is well worth it as its interior is a real gem, especially the choir which includes works from the famous Baroque sculptor Pedro de Mena.

If you are interested in architecture and religious art and you are planning your next holiday to Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, why don’t you include the cathedral of Malaga in your list of places to visit?

You won’t find a more amazing monument on Costa del Sol!

The Rock of Lovers

The Rock of Lovers

Valentine’s Day is on Friday so this week and this blog entry are all about love.

Many of us consider Costa del Sol a place full of charm and passion. Here you can find many beautiful corners, perfect spots to have a romantic moment with your other half and even places with a legend.

A good example of this is the Rock of Lovers in Antequera, a town in the Malaga region about 49 miles away from Fuengirola.

There is a romantic legend about this massive limestone rock and because of this it is known as “The Rock of Lovers”. The legend is about a pair of lovers (he a Christian, she a Moorish princess) who tried to run away from the soldiers sent by her father by climbing the rock. When they realized they had no escape they decided to jump to make sure they would be together for eternity.

Thanks to this legend, which is kind of like a Spanish “Romeo & Juliet”, this region has a certain romantic and melancholic atmosphere. Had you ever heard about this rock and its legend? Are there legends related to your town or city?

Many of you are very loyal guests and visit Hotel Angela and Costa del Sol very frequently. You might even consider it a romantic destination as you may have met someone special or your partner in here, maybe you have had many holidays here with your other half, or important events in your life may have happened here, so this might be a very special place for you. We would love to hear any romantic story or any special memory linked to Hotel Angela or to Costa del Sol, so if you fancy sharing them with us please do it by writing a comment here on the blog of Hotel Angela o by posting it on our Facebook Page.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

"Gitanillas" in Mijas

Do you love flowers? Do you have green fingers? Do you do some gardening in your spare time?

We don’t know about you but we really love flowers and for that reason many flowers and plants decorate our hotel to make it even more welcoming and beautiful.

It seems the Mijas Council shares the opinion that flowers make everything more beautiful and cheerful and for this reason it has decided to invest in 4.000 pots of beautiful “gitanillas” to decorate the streets of Mijas Pueblo, La Cala and Las Lagunas.

“Gitanilla”, which literally means “little gypsy”, is a variety of geranium and one of the most popular plants in Andalusia as it can be found in those beautiful and typical patios and balconies tourists love to photograph so much.

“Gitanillas” are very resistant and easy to take care of as they don’t need much water though they require lots of sunlight, so Spain, and especially Costa del Sol, is the perfect place for them to grow happily.

In Andalusia you can see them on plant pots on the floor though here the most typical thing is to hang them on the walls, and like this is how you will find them in Mijas.

Last week we recommended you to visit Mijas and La Cala to enjoy its Wintery Food Route. Now, after what we have just told you, you have a new reason to include Mijas in your list of places to visit on Costa del Sol while on holiday at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola.

Taking into consideration how beautiful and colourful Mijas looks right now we are sure your holiday snaps are going to be amazing!

Avocados from La Axarquia

Avocados from La Axarquia

Last week here on the blog of Hotel Angela we told you about Nerja, one of the most beautiful towns on Costa del Sol.

As we said Nerja is a very touristic place even if it still keeps its more traditional side. Like in the rest of Costa del Sol the tourist industry there is the most important one though it is not the only one that maintains its economy.

Like other towns belonging to La Axarquía, Nerja has cultivated land where subtropical products of great quality, like for example avocados, grow. The amazing weather we have in Malaga and the excellent quality of the soil are both perfect to grow this kind of fruit so for this reason nowadays La Axarquía is a leading exporter of subtropical products in Europe.

If we consider its nutritional values we see avocado is kind of perfect as it contains lots of proteins and it has many good properties. Among its great properties is to fight against cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer or heart diseases and to postpone ageing or maintain in good condition our nervous system.

Although it is very high in fats the fats it contains are “good fats” like Omega9, so it has properties similar to the ones olive oil has. In fact avocados are a very healthy substitute to animal fats, which is one of the reasons why many vegetarians eat it.

They are included in many Mediterranean dishes even if it originally comes from America. As it grows in Malaga and it is one of the healthiest fruits ever here at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, we always try to include them in some of our dishes, being a good example of this our tropical salad and our avocados with prawns.

Why don’t you include avocados on your diet? Soon you will notice its many benefits!

Visit Nerja

Visit Nerja

Are you planning to visit Hotel Angela in 2014? Are you willing to be more adventurous and to visit new places?

We hope the answer to both questions is yes as we love to see you back at the Angela and we also love to see you enjoying and making the most of your holiday.

This week we would like recommend you a visit to Nerja, a beautiful town in Costa del Sol very well known all over Spain thanks to a famous Spanish TV series from the 80s called “Verano Azul”.

Nerja is a touristic town but it stills keeps its typical Andalusian charm. It has beautiful beaches, good food and great weather, so it is a fantastic place to get to spend a day while on holiday at Hotel Angela.

Nerja is also famous for its stunning cave which was discovered by hazard by 5 teenagers in the late 50s. Inside the cave there are remains of cave paintings aged 42.000 years and also some impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

If you have not visited Nerja yet here from Hotel Angela we encourage you to do it as you will be able to see with your own eyes one of the many treasures that Costa del Sol hides!

New museum in Mijas

New museum in Mijas

Last week we told you about the lovely statues that the town of Mijas has dedicated to its most symbolic animal. Today we continue talking about art and about Mijas as last Saturday the 30th of November the Contemporary Art Centre of this beautiful town on Costa del Sol opened its doors for the first time.

This Contemporary Art Centre has had a great start as its opening exhibition includes 60 pieces of the great Picasso.

This first exhibition is called “Picasso, friends and contemporaries”, so apart from these 60 pieces of Picasso some other works from famous artists like Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró or Georges Braque will also be on display.

These pieces will be in there for about 3 months, so if you are currently on holiday at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, or if you are planning to come soon, we certainly recommend you to visit this new museum as seeing the works of the famous artist from Malaga and his colleagues is well worth it!

The museum is open the 365 days of the year from 10:00 A.M to 6:00 P.M and the entrance price is 3 euros so quite a good value.

Enjoy art on Costa del Sol!

Mijas pays homage to donkeys

Mijas pays homage to donkeys

Here on the blog of Hotel Angela we have told you about Mijas a few times and we have already recommended you to visit it.

Although most people think Mijas is quite small, reality is quite different as it is the second most populated town on Costa del Sol and also the second biggest. How can this be possible? Well, the thing is that when we talk about Mijas not only we refer to Mijas Pueblo (the beautiful white washed village) but also to Las Lagunas (an area of Mijas bordering with Fuengirola) and to Mijas Costa (where for example you can find the coastal town of La Cala).

Mijas Pueblo is better known internationally due to its beauty, its typical Andalusian charm and its legendary donkeys.

Mijas loves these animals and it is very grateful to them so for this reason the town has wanted to pay them homage in the form of statue (or more likely statues as there are 3 of them).

These statues have been made by a local artist and in 2011 the first of them was placed in Plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo. This year in July the second one was placed beside the town hall in La Cala and then in August the third was put by the Costa Mijas Shopping Centre which belongs to the famous Spanish Department Store “El Corte Inglés”.

The best thing about these statues is that all of them have a pair of steps so anyone who fancies can climb up the donkey and for example get a funny picture taken.

If you are on holiday at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, or you are planning to visit us we encourage you to get a picture taken if you get to see any of these donkeys.

We are sure it will be one of your best and funniest holiday snaps!

Sister cities

Sister cities

We know that many of you possibly know Fuengirola even better than us as some of you have been coming to Hotel Angela for almost 40 years.

This city is so culturally rich and interesting that whenever we find out something new about it we get excited.

For example, did you know that Fuengirola has a sister city which is 4885 miles from us?

Our sister city is called New Iberia and it is in Louisiana in the United States.

New Iberia is the 10th biggest city of its state and it is much larger than Fuengirola though Fuengirola is more populated. Due to its subtropical weather there it rains quite a lot while in Fuengirola we have a fantastic Mediterranean weather with around 300 sunny days a year.

Why do you think these two very different cities have such a special link? Colonization is the answer. In 1779 New Iberia was colonized by Spanish colonists from Malaga, so for this reason this American city is not only sisters with Fuengirola but also with Alhaurín de la Torre, another town on Costa del Sol…Interesting right?

Fuengirola always manages to surprise us!!

Fuengirola Flea market

Fuengirola Flea market

We know most of you love markets and when you are on holiday with us at Hotel Angela you really enjoy going to the one that takes place every Tuesday at the fairground, but did you know Saturday is also market day in Fuengirola?

The one on Saturday more than a market is a flea market or a massive car boot sale. It is also hosted at the fairground and it is really big so there you can find any kind of second hand object you can imagine like books in many languages, antiques, jewelry, clothes, golf balls and clubs, toys or old discs.

Most of the stalls belong to expats who come weekly to this flea market to exhibit and sell their things.

This is one of the most popular in town as there you can find real treasures for a good price… It takes time to find a real gem though as you have to look for it and the market is massive!

If you are a real treasure hunter and right now you are on holiday at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, why don’t you visit one of the best flea markets on Costa del Sol this Saturday?

We hope you love the plan we just suggested you!!

Malaga Almonds

Malaga Almonds

Some weeks ago, here on the blog of Hotel Angela, we told you about the tasty and traditional Malaga raisins. Today we would like to talk about another very typical product from Malaga: almonds.

As we told you when we talked about raisins, even if tourism is the most important economic sector in Malaga, agriculture is also very important for the region.

Almonds grow mainly in the Guadalhorce Valley, Antequera and some areas of La Axarquía and are one of the most exported products from Malaga.

One of the towns that love this product the most is Almogía, a nice village in the Malaga Mountains which most important economic activity is mainly the cultivation of almonds. This village every late September celebrates the Day of the Almond, an event which main aim is to promote their typical products and show visitors the importance and the traditional side of the almond industry.

You can have them salty if you eat them fried or sweet if you go for the garrapiñada version. Not only they can be eaten as a snack but they also can be part of many lovely dishes as they are a very important ingredient in our cuisine. Two very typical dishes from here containing almonds are the Malaga sponge or the traditional ajoblanco, a cold soup which colour is white due to this ingredient.

You surely have seen some almond kiosks while wandering around Costa del Sol. These kiosks are so typical from Malaga that we really hope they never disappear as thanks to them the old profession of the almond seller stays alive.

If you have never tried these lovely Malaga almonds here at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, we recommend you get some from one of these traditional kiosks, give them a go and if you fancy please share your impressions with us.

We declare ourselves in love with Malaga and its typical products!! What about you?

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween

Halloween is approaching, and this year more than ever at Hotel Angela, we're dying to celebrate it with you since last year, due to renovation closures, we couldn't do it.

For us, Halloween is a fun holiday where we dress up and everyone brings out the inner child in them.

As Thursday approaches, at Hotel Angela, we're finalizing the last details of the Halloween party we have prepared for you, and we hope you'll love it.

For the occasion, we've decorated our entertainment room in a special way since our festive event will take place there. On that night, we'll have fun Halloween games and also a comedic performance with the same theme.

Additionally, this Halloween 2013 brings back the fun employee pumpkin contest. In 2011, despite it being the first time for most to decorate a pumpkin, they set the bar high. So, we're sure that their creativity will surprise us again this year.

If you're currently staying at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, starting from tomorrow, Tuesday, you'll have the chance to see their terrifying pumpkins, which will be displayed by the reception, and vote for them. If you're not with us, don't worry, you'll be able to see and vote for them on our Facebook page.

We have no idea what they will look like, but what we do know is that it's going to be tough to choose our favorite!

Max's Caravan

Max's Caravan

Max’s Caravan is one of the most legendary tourist attractions on Costa del Sol.

Located in Mijas Pueblo, this peculiar museum opened its doors in 1972 becoming one of the many appeals this beautiful town has.

Professor Max was the stage name of Juan Elegido Millán, a magician and hypnotist from Guadalajara who also studied medicine.

Its bohemian and adventurous spirit made him travel the world. In these travels, he started to get and collect miniatures.

The collection exhibited counts with 360 pieces. The most popular of them are the portrait of Abraham Lincoln on a pin head or Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Dinner on a rice grain.

Max’s Caravan is a unique museum on Costa del Sol and around the world. It is open daily and it is situated in Avenida Del Compás, one of the main streets in Mijas.

If we have managed to awaken your curiosity and you are one of those who appreciate peculiar stuff Hotel Angela recommends you to go to Mijas and visit this special museum.

Malaga raisins

Malaga raisins

We know that many of you are loyal guests of Hotel Angela and that you have visited us for many years and you love Costa del Sol, for this reason, as you possibly don’t know much about it, today we would like to talk about the most traditional side of our beautiful region.

We tend to relate Costa del Sol to sea, sun, fishing and holiday makers, and we forget that here agriculture is also important, to the point that the muscatel grape industry is one of the most outstanding in the region.

The famous muscatel grapes grow in the Axarquía (Eastern Costa del Sol) and Manilva areas (Western Costa del Sol bordering the province of Cadiz).

These grapes get ripe by the end of July or beginning of August and once they have been collected they can be used as table grapes, for wine production or as raisins.

The drying process is a very old technique that consists of drying them under the sun.

The grapes have an even dark reddish colour, an intense sweet flavour and some seeds.

In Malaga and Andalusia, possibly because of our Arabic heritage, raisins have an important role in our gastronomy as they are usually used to go with meat, to create sauces or to prepare some sweets or desserts.

Did you know how important raisins were on Costa del Sol? Have you tried any dish which contained them during your stay at Hotel Angela? What are the typical products of your region? We are very curious and we would like to know it, so if you fancy you can tell us on our Facebook page.

Bingo

Bingo

As many of you already know Hotel Angela has had to change the rules of bingo.

Currently in Spain it is not allowed to gamble and receive money in exchange unless you are in a casino or a gambling room.

We know how important this game is to you and how much you enjoy playing on your holiday at Hotel Angela, so because of this and following the advice of the local government we decided to offer you tickets you can use at the Angela or at any of our sister hotels as a prize.

The only legal option was to offer something that we sell at the hotel as a prize, so we considered the best thing to do would be to give tickets as a price so our guests could decide what they would like to get.

Before, many of our guests used their bingo prize to pay their drinks at the bar or to pay another holiday. Now even if the rules have changed, you can keep on doing it, so we understand the change is positive.

Bingo is still played 6 nights a week and the price of the bingo card is 2 euros.

Enjoy Bingo and best of luck next time you play!

Do you fancy a massage?

Do you fancy a massage?

Last week here on the blog we talked about our amazing new Aguagym classes but did you know that now at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, we also have a new massage service available?

Hotel Angela in collaboration with Renova Thermal, a well known company on Costa del Sol specialised on massages, has placed a wonderful massage tent at the solarium. Hugo the masseur will be there daily, from 10 A.M to 6 P.M.

At this tent you will be able to get different kind of massages like express massages of just 10 or 15 minutes or more complete and specific massages of 25 or 50 minutes.

Massages not only help us to relax but also have healing properties able to ease or remove certain health problems.

It is common to think that giving or receiving massages is a relatively recent practice. Far from it as archaeological evidence of massage has been found in many ancient civilizations like Egypt, Rome, Greece or Mesopotamia.

The guests that have already tried this new service did not regret it as there is nothing better than receiving a nice massage outdoors!

If you fancy it, give it a go!

Same as in aerobics music is very important when practising aquagym, as it will help us to relax or to activate us. In water we float so the effort seems to lessen and we don’t get very tired… Aquagym sounds amazing, isn’t it?

How to make paella

How to make paella

Back in September we dedicated a blog entry to one of the most important dishes of Spanish cuisine: paella.

Many of you already know how to prepare a beautiful paella as every second week here at Hotel Angela our lovely PR Alison shows you how to cook one and explains you the secrets of this tasty dish.

At Hotel Angela we are big food lovers so, as the paella recipe has been requested by some of our guests, today we would like to share it with you.

There you go …

INGREDIENTS (6 servings)

– 600g rice
– 500g clams
– 300g prawns
– 2 ripe tomatoes
– 1 green pepper
– 2 cloves of garlic
– Paella colouring
– Parsley
– 800g chicken
– 200g squid
– 1 small onion
– 150g peas
– 2 red peppers
– 10 strands of saffron
– Salt
– ½ cup olive oil

METHOD

Wash the clams in cold water with a bit of salt; open them in a saucepan with ½ cup of water, strain and reserve the clams and the resulting stock separately. Wash the peppers, deseed them and chop them. Wash the chicken and chop it. Wash the squid and cut it into pieces. Peel the prawns and boil the shell and heads for 10 minutes; strain and reserve the stock. Heat the oil in a paella pan and fry the chicken until golden; add the squid, sauté for a few minutes and add the finely chopped onion, the peppers, the peas and the peeled tomatoes. Sauté for 15 minutes. Add the rice, stir and pour in the reserved stock and some more water as it will have to double the volume of the rice. Mix the peeled garlic with parsley and saffron and add it to the paella, season and add a bit of colouring. Let it cook for 10 minutes on a high heat. Lower the heat and cook for about 6-7 minutes. Finally add the prawns and clams. Let it rest for about 3-4 minutes and serve…Very easy, right?

Paella is a very summery dish, so now that you have the recipe and the good weather is here we are sure that you will be willing to have a wonderful dinner party at home and cook it for your friends and family! Let us know how it goes! We are sure it will be a success!

Fuengirola Little Finland

Fuengirola Little Finland

It is quite obvious that Fuengirola is a very international town as it is visited by an important number of tourists and it also has many foreign residents, but did you know that Fuengirola has the biggest Finnish community outside Scandinavia?Centro Finlandia - Hotel Angela Fuengirola

The first Finnish arrived in the 70s and from that moment they have not really stopped.

Due to the big number of Finnish people who nowadays live in Fuengirola they have their own media and even their own Finnish school, a unique and outstanding school in Spain that it is considered to have an excellent educational system.

These days at Los Boliches Library you can even find some books in Finnish. The reason is that the majority of them loves Los Boliches and chooses the Los Pacos district as their favourite place to live, therefore the number of establishments owned by Finnish people in Los Boliches and Los Pacos is quite big.

By the way, have you ever visited the Finnish shopping centre in Los Boliches right beside Hotel Angela?

This shopping centre called “Centro Finlandia” is a reference to the Finnish community in Fuengirola, as there you can find all kind of Finnish establishments like shops with Finnish products, a restaurant or a beauty salon.

It is open from Monday to Friday from 9 A.M to 8 P.M and Saturdays from 10 A.M to 2 P.M.

As Hotel Angela is so close we encourage you to visit it. You will get to see the most international side of Fuengirola!!

Fuengirola History Museum

Fuengirola History Museum

We are aware that many of you love Hotel Angela and are quite fond of the city of Fuengirola but did you know that we have a History Museum in town?

Located in Plaza de España, right in the city centre, this interesting museum shows you how the city looked in the old period and it did in a more modern stage.

When visiting the exhibition of Phoenician, Roman and Arabic objects you will be able to appreciate the wonderful historical heritage of Fuengirola, a place with an exceptional location that back in the day attracted many civilizations.

From the more modern period there is an exhibition of objects related to the most typical works in town before the tourist boom took place, as fishing or craft working.

Its entrance is free and it is open mornings from Tuesday to Saturday (from 11:00 A.M to 1:00 P.M).

If you would like to know a little bit more about the past of one of the most important towns in Costa del Sol do not miss the opportunity to visit this attractive museum.

bloodletting

bloodletting

When we think about holidays and Costa del Sol it is impossible not to think about the beach, the sun and a tasty glass of sangria.

Sangria is the Spanish drink par excellence. It is world-wide known and its main ingredients are red wine, fruit, sugar, spices and liquor.

The name “sangria” comes from the word “sangre” that in Spanish means “blood”. This reference to the word “blood” is due to the colour of the wine which is its main ingredient. We can really use any kind of red wine though we would get better results if we use a young fruity one.

Sangria has to be served cold and has to be presented in a transparent jug so that way the fruit can be seen. This popular drink can’t be considered a cocktail for a few reasons, for example it is a drink that it is normally drunk with meals, it is prepared in a jug, not in a cocktail shaker, and served in a common glass not in a cocktail one.

It seems that Spaniards started to drink sangria during the first decade of the 19th Century, but…did you know that apparently the English were the ones who made it fashionable in the mid 19th Century? Interesting fact, right?

Do you love sangria? Would you fancy learning how to prepare it? If so this Thursday at 11:30 at Hotel Angela’s Snack Bar, Alison, our public relations and entertainment manager, will show you how to prepare a delicious and refreshing sangria. Don’t miss out!

Cheers!!

The paella

The paella

When we think of Spain, its cuisine is one of the first things that comes to our mind. Paella is a very famous Spanish dish and, as it happens to other well known international dishes, it has become very flexible as it admits lots of ingredients and many different ways of cooking it.

The word “paella” comes from the old French word paele, which in modern French is poêle (pan). The word “paella” started to get used in Spanish to name this traditional dish as a synonym to “Valencian rice”, when it really refers to the container used to cook it.

It seems that this typical food started to get cooked around the 15th century in rural Valencia when shepherds and peasants created an easy to carry dish using the ingredients they had access to. Its original ingredients were poultry and rabbit meat, vegetables, rice, saffron and olive oil. On the other hand nobody really knows when seafood paella, typical from the coast, started to get cooked.

Mixed Paella is a combination of both as you can mix meat and seafood. This is a later creation that has managed to seduce many people.

Here in Hotel Ángela we know that many of you love it and because of this on Tuesday (every 2 weeks) in the Snack-Bar at 11.30 a.m our lovely Public Relations Alison shows you how to cook one.

Tomorrow is paella day, so do not miss this wonderful chance and learn the secrets of Spanish cuisine. This way when you get back home you will be able to cook a beautiful one and impress family and friends… Don’t panic and get to experiment in the kitchen, afterwards we would love to read your comments on Facebook!

Tomorrow is Tuesday and as some of you know Tuesdays are Market Day in Fuengirola.

The location of the Fuengirola Market is in the Recinto Ferial and it covers most of the fair ground area so this is why it is considered as one of the biggest in Spain.

It is really good for bargains and well worth a look around as this market has it all, from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothes, accessories, household items, local pottery or CDs.

If you love shopping this is a must visit when in Fuengirola as you will find so many new but cheap things that you will struggle to decide what to take home with you!

Here in Hotel Ángela we know that most of you have a passion for markets, so we wanted to make it easier for you. On Tuesdays, Alison, our lovely Public Relations, at around 10:30 a.m goes to the market with all the guests interested in visiting it.

The fair ground is not very far from Hotel Ángela (about 7 minutes walking) so do not think about it twice, go with Alison and enjoy the shopping!

Get to know: Begoña Gámez

Get to know: Begoña Gámez

This month the star of our blog section dedicated to our staff is Begoña Gámez.

Begoña is one of the hard working girls from the Snack Bar, so we are sure that most of you already know her.

She has been working with us nearly seven years and she says that what she likes the most about working at the hotel is “the working environment. It is like a big family because many of our guests come and visit us 2 or 3 times a year”.

Begoña has a special bond with many of them, that is why she remembers fondly when she got married and some of our guests gave her wedding presents because they were also excited about her big day.

Her most remarkable feature is her smile which is much appreciated by our guests who tend to thank her for her friendliness and kindness.

When we ask her about her hobbies she does not hesitate a minute: “I love going to flamenco lessons” ¡¡Olé!!

Her favourite place in Fuengirola is the beach. She especially enjoys going to the one near the Castle of Sohail as that way she can enjoy the beautiful views while she is sunbathing on her sunbed.

She also told us that her favourite restaurant in Fuengirola is “Restaurante La Farola” located in C/ Cuesta (Plaza Yate) where you can enjoy either national or international cuisine.

Begoña also gave us a special message for you all: I would like to thank our guests for keeping on choosing Hotel Ángela as their holiday hotel”. Isn’t she lovely?

We are sure that most of you will see her again very soon. Now that you know that she can dance flamenco don’t miss out and ask her to show you some moves! Though if you would like to say something to her or share your comments with us before your next visit remember that you can do it on our facebook page..

Get to know: Antonia Aguilera

Get to know: Antonia Aguilera

Some of our most frequent guests probably know Antonia Aguilera. This post will allow you to get to know a little bit more about her. She was born in Villanueva de Tapia a town in Málaga and has been working with us for 25 years by now. Actually last Christmas she received a gold watch, the company’s present for those 25 years of excellent service. She has worked in the restaurant and the snack bar before becoming part of the administrative office at our hotel. She is one of our colleagues that works behind the scenes and it is very important for us that you meet all of them because we are all a big family that could not do without anyone.

Antonia, like most of our colleagues, tells us that what she likes the most about working at Hotel Angela is “to meet a lot of people”, and she gives us an example of a fun anecdote that happened to her with a spanish bullfighter:

“I gave the bill to Jose María Manzanares and he dedicated it to me thinking I was asking him for an autograph!”

She also recalls a time when “a guest gave me a rose and said: Mrs., you are a rose”. From her habit of “wanting to have everything under control, and as far as I can reach” she has a message for all our guests, which reflects very well what the whole team thinks:

“I would like all our guests to tell us more about their preferences, this way we could adapt even more to your needs; and also would like you to know that we all work very hard so that your holidays are the best possible ever.

Have you seen the pictures? Isn’t it great to see how she has developed inside our company? We are very proud of having people like her in our team, this is how over the years we have become a great family. Next month you will get to meet another one of us… Meanwhile, if you want to say something to Antonia (we call her Toñi, which is s short version of her name in Spanish), make sure to do so in our our facebook page.

Let's take care of the environment

Let's take care of the environment

It´s time to think green. The Hotel Angela is already adapted to this new thought in which everyone concentrates in protecting the earth. Low-consuming lights, double glass windows, economizing water taps and the incorporation in 2009 of led lights in common areas are some of the ways this hotel at Fuengirola pretends to help.

There are many ways of taking care of the environment and one of the most important and easy to do is recycling. At our hotel we recycle anything that is recyclable:

  • Oil – from the kitchens is collected by a specialized company that then makes natural soap amongst other things.
  • Glass bottles and containers – are returned to be used again.
  • Cardboard
  • Lightbulbs
  • Batteries – at the front desk you will find a container to drop any you might have.
  • Plastic
  • Paper – from all the office work, we use both sides and then send it to recycle.
  • Water – from the air conditioning units and buffet engines used to water the garden and plants in the hotel.

All this actions are very important to keep our earth in good conditions. Just to give you an idea of the impact little gestures can have, we have measured that we recycle 2500 Liters of water every day at Hotel Angela. Don’t you think this is something we should think about seriously? Can you imagine how much we can all do together?

As part of our enthusiasm for the planet and the environment, we invite all our guests and readers to share this view and take care of the world for the generations to come. To contribute to this purpose you may help us recycle plastic, paper, cardboard, batteries…as well as offering new ideas or suggestions in our Facebook, by email or by mail.

It is all about caring and team work.
